Recounting her time in custody, BJP's candidate for Bhopal Sadhvi Pragya Thakur while addressing a gathering on Thursday said that she was brutally tortured in custody after her arrest in October 2008 in the aftermath of the Malegaon blasts in which nine people were killed.
"They (investigating officers) used to verbally abuse me while beating me up. I was hung upside down and stripped. This is not easy for me to discuss. After beating me every night, they stopped only when blood used to flow freely from the bruises on my hands. Then they used to get a bucket full of hot water mixed with salt and put my hands in that. After cooling my hands for an hour by keeping them on the ground, they used to continue hitting me," she said, breaking down as she narrated the ordeal.
Thakur added that she was tortured by authorities in the hope that she would confess to executing the Malegaon blasts.
"They asked me just a single question- whether I did the blast? And I replied 'No'. What act I have not done, I would not accept it. Then they told me that I am an RSS-terrorist. They kept asking me who are in communication with? Whom did you train? I said I don't know. I knew Hindutva was being targetted," she said.
Giving further details of her abuse, Thakur said that she had been continuously beaten for 24 days, which she suffered through without eating, without sleeping and without uttering a word.
Levelling serious allegations of being contracted with cancer due to the various tests she was subjected to in custody, Thakur also claims that an attempt on her life had also occurred.
"I was subjected to three narco tests, three polygraph tests, three brain mapping tests. In these mechanized tests, fluids are injected into the body due to which I got Cancer. For nine years I used to lie on the ground, unable to move. An attempt was made on my life too," she said.
Her induction into BJP and her candidacy for the Bhopal polls has been criticized by various Opposition leaders. Former Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said that 'the party is proving its Hindutva ideology by inducting her'. NC Chief Omar Abdullah has said that the court should cancel her bail, as, if she is fit enough to contest elections, she is fit enough to go back to jail. On the other hand, the BJP has claimed that she was implicated by the then UPA government.
BJP had inducted the Malegaon accused into the party on Wednesday and announced that Sadhvi Pragya will contest from the Bhopal constituency of Madhya Pradesh against Congress veteran Digvijaya Singh.
