2019 Lok Sabha Election Results for Mumbai South, Maharashtra: Shiv Sena's Arvind Sawant roars to victory, silences Congress' Milind Deora

In the direct face-off between sitting MP from the constituency Arvind Sawant of Shiv Sena (BJP’s Maharashtra ally) and Mumbai Congress chief Milind Deora, the Lok Sabha seat has garnered a lot of attention in the political discourse during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

In the intense battle between the sitting MP and a former MP, Shiv Sena's Arvind Sawant has won the Mumbai South Lok Sabha constituency by a vote margin of 10,0067 votes (12.49 percent) against Congress' Milind Deora, who emerged at the second spot with 32,1362 votes (40.15 percent) in his kitty. Arvind Sawant has won Mumbai South Lok Sabha seat with 52.64 percent votes.

2019 Election campaign

During the 2019 polls, two-times MP from Mumbai South, Milind Deora saw high-pitched backing by prominent industrialists like Mukesh Ambani and Uday Kotak. A Former Minister of State with the Ministry of Information Technology and Communications and the Former Minister of State with the Ministry of Shipping within the Government of India, Deora has a mass appeal among the voters of South Mumbai.

Shiv Sena’s Arvind Sawant currently holds the seat, after he defeated Milind Deora from the Mumbai South Lok Sabha constituency by a margin of 128148 votes in 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

Historical trend:

Historically, the seat was held by Milind Deora’s father Murli Deora for two terms, following which Milind had won two elections from South Mumbai in 2004 by defeating Jayawantiben Mehta of the BJP and in 2009 by defeating Bala Nandgaonkar of the MNS. While in 2014, Arvind Sawant had beaten Milind Deora by 1.28 lakh votes, in 2009, Deora had defeated MNS’s Bala Nandaonkar by 1.12 lakh votes, which proves it to be prestige battle for both the top contenders for the seat, especially after the alliance of BJP and Shiv Sena for 2019 Lok Sabha polls. The constituency went to polls in the fourth phase of elections on April 29.
