The Congress party-led by Rahul Gandhi on Monday sacked Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam and appointed Milind Deora in his place. Hours after the announcement, newly-appointed Mumbai Congress chief Milind Deora took to Twitter and posted a statement thanking UPA chief Sonia Gandhi and party president Rahul Gandhi for 'giving the opportunity to lead the Mumbai Congress'.

Adding that the appointment came at a 'challenging time', he said that he commits himself to strengthen the roots of the party in the capital city of Maharashtra.

"I will focus on holistic development - with a focus on housing for all, protection to small and medium enterprises and the enrichment of social and communal harmony," he said in the statement.

Lastly, he thanked his predecessor Sanjay Nirupam, who is all set to contest the 2019 elections from Mumbai North-west, wishing him great success in personal and professional life.

Earlier, the press release by the Mumbai Congress announcing the appointment of Milind Deora Mumbai Regional Congress Committee chief stated:

"Honourable Congress President Shri. Rahul Gandhi has appointed Shri. Milind Deora as the new President of Mumbai Regional Congress Committee. The party appreciates the contribution of outgoing President Shri. Sanjay Nirupam."

The change at the top of the Mumbai Congress comes on the back of months of infighting between the two leaders and their respective camps.

42-year-old Milind Deora has twice been a Member of the Lok Sabha from the Mumbai South constituency, and had served as the Minister of State for Communications and IT and Shipping under the UPA-2. Sanjay Nirupam, meanwhile, had been a Rajya Sabha member from Maharashtra from 1996 to 2006 and was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Mumbai North seat in 2009.
