As the country goes to polls in the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections on Thursday, the chief minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis casting his vote with his family has appealed to people to vote for a 'strong government'

While addressing the media, Fadnavis casting his vote in Nagpur asserted that this election is decisive of who will 'handle the country' and appealed to voters to participate in the largest democratic practise in the world.

He said, "I and my family just voted. This election will be decide of what party should handle the country and exactly why my wife, my mother and my entire family casted our vote in Nagpur and it is our request that all of us should cast votes and vote to bring a strong government in the country."

"I'd like to appeal to the citizens of the country and Maharashtra, India's democracy is the largest in the world and this democracy will only strengthen only when people will participate in this," he added.

Earlier in the day, Union Minister and sitting MP for Nagpur cast his vote in the constituency and expressed confidence over his win in the Lok Sabha polls, while urging people to come in large numbers to place their votes.

"I am seeing people are coming out in numbers to vote for people. I urge more voters to come out and practice their right. I have cast my vote. Nagpur people have shown their support to me, seeing my work in the city. We all have worked. I know I will with more margin than the previous elections," said the Union Minister.

Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road, Transport, and Highways, is the BJP candidate from Nagpur. In 2014 general elections, he defeated Vilas Muttemwar of the Congress party. This time, Congress has fielded BJP rebel Nana Patole against Nitin Gadkari.

Polling for the first phase of Lok Sabha elections began in the morning in the state's seven seats in Maharashtra - Nagpur, Wardha, Ramtek, Bhandara-Gondiya, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli-Chimur and Yavatmal-Washim. All these seats are located in the state's Vidarbha region.
