Weeks to go before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, famous Bollywood actress Urmila Matondkar has officially joined the Congress, following a meeting with party president Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on Wednesday.
The official twitter handle of the Indian National Congress posted a tweet welcoming her to the party. It read:
Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala and newly appointed Mumbai Congress chief Milind Deora inducted Matondkar into the party in the presence of senior Maharashtra Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam.
After joining the party, she spoke to media and said: “Today is a very big day for me as I step into politics. I would like to thank Rahul Gandhi for giving me such a warm welcome along with all the other members of the party. Although belonging from the Bollywood industry, my family has shaped my personality on the principles of Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. I am not here to show glamour. I am here to stay ”
She added, ”Our Constitution and democracy is considered to be one of the best in the world. I feel ‘Freedom’ plays a very vital role in a country as it sticks the two together. As an actress, I believe freedom of speech is necessary in the country but in today’s world this freedom of ours is in grave danger. I am here to voice the thoughts of the people of our country; I am here because I have faith in Congress’ ideology.”
The Congress is likely to field Urmila Matondkar from the Mumbai North Lok Sabha constituency - a seat from where Sanjay Nirupam lost to BJP's Gopal Shetty in 2014 by over four lakh votes.
