It’s a repeat of Lok Sabha elections in 2014 as Congress’ Priya Dutt and Bharatiya Janata Party’s Poonam Mahajan lock horns for Mumbai North Central seat. The former is pleased with the response from the public and party workers while asserting her work with full responsibility being elected twice after getting the seat in ‘viraasat’ (inheritance) from her father, late actor-filmmaker Sunil Dutt.

In a grand show of strength at a rally in the city on Monday where brother Sanjay Dutt was also present, Priya was asked for a reaction with the enthusiasm of people as was witnessed on the day. She replied, “I don’t have much to say, I would like to thank our party workers and also the public, they have showered me with love and support. I believe that our workers are a big support for us.” 

On the controversy surrounding Sadhvi Pragya Thakur, an accused in the Malegaon blast case, getting a BJP ticket to contest from Bhopal, she said, “I have given a statement over it, it is not the right situation to talk about it.” 

On being asked about receiving the Lok Sabha seat in ‘viraasat’ from her father after his death, Priya shot back, “It’s not the first time I’m fighting the elections. I got it (Lok Sabha seat) in ‘viraasat’ in 2005, since then I was elected twice. I’m absolutely clear about the responsibility on me, and I have always worked with full responsibility”.

After Dutt Sr, who was then a Congress MP from Mumbai North West, passed way in 2005, Priya had fought in the bypoll and was elected to the Lok Sabha.

In 2009, she won the elections to become the Lok Sabha Member of Parliament from Mumbai North Central constituency. However, the Congress leader was beaten by Poonam Mahajan in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. 

Mumbai goes to polls in the fourth phase on April 29.
