With a victory all but confirmed in Mizoram, following the trends of vote counting which saw them leading in 23 seats out of 40 at 1:30 pm on December 11, Mizo National Front (MNF) chief Zoramthanga has stated that he and his party will form the government in the state without any other party's support.
Speaking exclusively to Republic TV with is party comfortably ahead and looking set to outs the Congress from power, he said, "I was very delighted when I got to know that I got 26 out of 40 seats. Previously, I had predicted that our party will win between 25 to 30 seats. But now it is 26, and with the work of our party workers, we have come back after 10 years. Because we have the numbers we will form the government on our own. Certainly we'll form it on our own."
The counting of votes of elections in Mizoram, along with Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and Chhattisgarh began at 8 am on Tuesday. The early indications suggested that there would be a close contest between the Congress and MNF. But with time, the latter increased its lead, so much so that Congress were pushed down to single digits with just seven seats.
MNF's dominance isn't a surprise, given the exit polls had predicted a similar result. The poll of polls released by Republic TV had showed an inclination towards MNF with 19 seats,14 for Congress and 7 for ZPM.
