Longest-serving Delhi Chief Minister and current Congress state president Sheila Dikshit is contesting against incumbent MP and BJP Delhi chief Manoj Tiwari. Making it a triangular battle, AAP' has fielded Dilip Pandey, its former state chief. The constituency with 22.89 lakh voters went to polls on May 12.

As the counting gets over, BJP Delhi chief Manoj Tiwari won  with a margin of 3 lakh votes

Carved out post-delimitation in 2008, North East Delhi constituency was comfortably won by Congress’ JP Agarwal in 2009 against BJP's BL Sharma. However, in 2014, BJP candidate Manoj Tiwari won against AAP's Anand Kumar by 1.44 lakh votes. In 2015 though, AAP swept the assembly segments under North East Delhi. The only thing constant in all this was the Congress steadily losing support.

A controversy in this constituency occurred when AAP chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal called BJP candidate and regional head Manoj Tiwari a 'naachne wala' (someone who dances), making a derogatory slur on his background as an artist.

"This time don't give the 'naachne wala' a vote, he's not of any use. All these five years you were never able to meet Tiwari. He did not give a single school to this area. Roads have not been built. Manoj Tiwari is a good dancer but AAP’s Dilip Pandey cannot dance that’s why people should vote for him as he will definitely work for the development of the constituency. Manoj Tiwari has been missing from the last five years," Kejriwal had said.

Responding to this, Tiwari had said: ”By abusing me he has directly insulted the people of 'purvanchal' and same people will show him what are the consequences of it."

Purvanchalis and migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar constitute close to 40% voters in North East Delhi and constitute a support base for Manoj Tiwari. There are close to 270 unauthorised colonies and 46 slum clusters in this constituency and each party are promising development in those areas.

While AAP's Pandey is fighting in the plank of separate statehood, Tiwari has promised pucca houses for slum dwellers. Dikshit is banking on her personal goodwill among the people as a three-time CM to pass the stern Tiwari test. The assembly segments under North East Delhi are Burari, Babarpur, Ghonda, Gokalpur, Karawal Nagar, Mustafabad, Rohtash Nagar, Seemapuri, Seelampur and Timarpur.
