UPDATE: Delhi Congress chief CM Sheila Dikshit has called all party district presidents at 11 am at her residence, PC Chako will also attend the meeting, sources said. The meeting will be held to iron out differences over the alliance with the AAP, the sources have added.
After weeks of flip-flop on whether to go on a coalition or not, the AAP and Congress have reached an understanding to join hands for the Lok Sabha elections in Delhi and Haryana, highly placed sources said.
As per the sources, Congress has agreed to form an alliance in Delhi and Haryana with the Arvind Kerjiwal-led party. The AAP will be contesting from four of the seven seats in Delhi and Congress will be contesting from the remaining three seats, the sources added.
The AAP had wanted a coalition with the Congress in Punjab, Goa, Haryana and Delhi. The talks are still on for Punjab and Goa.
Republic Media Network had reported on Thursday that the talks have restarted between the two parties
AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh met PC Chacko, in charge of Delhi for All India Congress Committee, leading to speculations of a tie-up between both the parties on Wednesday evening.
Sources in both the parties claimed that the ruling AAP has proposed to provide two seats to the Congress party which instead has demanded three, being that of New Delhi, Chandni Chowk, and North East Delhi.
It has also been reported that the offer from the AAP will be conveyed by Chacko to Congress president Rahul Gandhi who will further make a decision on the issue in the next few days.
The AAP has been aiming for a tie-up with the Congress in order to defeat the BJP and replace the PM Modi-led government.
While the likes of Ajay Maken (former DPCC president) and PC Chacko had been in favor of joining hands with the ruling party in Delhi for the upcoming polls, former state CM Sheila Dikshit and her camp seemed to be against it.
Even within the AAP, MLA Alka Lamba raised questions on the alliance owing to Congress' position on giving full statehood to Delhi.
The Congress in its manifesto had promised statehood to Puducherry. However, it did not mention any proposal on giving full statehood to Delhi, an issue which has been a contentious point between AAP and the grand old party.
