The Congress and AAP have sealed the deal for an alliance in Delhi, say sources. Sources have added that AAP will fight from four seats and the Congress will fight from the remaining three seats.
Top Congress leader Sheila Dikshit, who had been opposing the alliance, and Punjab CM Amarinder Singh, who had said earlier that Congress can win the polls on its own in the state, along with PC Chacko and Ahmed Patel had met at Rahul Gandhi's residence on Saturday following which the alliance was finalised, the sources said. They added that the meeting also saw talks on an alliance with Punjab.
Rahul Gandhi, as per sources, is positive about the alliance in Delhi after it was decided that Congress will fight from three seats.
Sheila Dikshit has called for a meeting of the Delhi Congress in which PC Chako and all district presidents will be present at the DPCC office at 12 pm on Saturday.
Republic Media Network had reported on Friday, based on input from sources, that AAP and Congress had reached an understanding to join hands for the Lok Sabha elections in Delhi and Haryana.
Congress had agreed to form an alliance in Delhi and Haryana with the Arvind Kerjiwal-led party, the sources had said on Friday.
The AAP had wanted a coalition with the Congress in Punjab, Goa, Haryana and Delhi, the sources said. The talks are still on for Punjab and Goa, the sources said.
The party has been aiming for a tie-up with the Congress in order to defeat the BJP and replace the PM Modi-led government.
While the likes of Ajay Maken (former DPCC president) and PC Chacko had been in favor of joining hands with the ruling party in Delhi for the upcoming polls, former state CM Sheila Dikshit and her camp seemed to be against it.
Even within the AAP, MLA Alka Lamba raised questions on the alliance owing to Congress' position on giving full statehood to Delhi.
