This sensational development comes only a day after the saffron party fielded popular Punjabi singer Hans Raj Hans from the North-West Delhi constituency, removing sitting MP Udit Raj from the contest.

After Hans Raj Hans was given a ticket to contest the elections from Delhi, Udit Raj, who had won in 2014 General Elections from Delhi's Northeast constituency on BJP ticket, claimed that he was being forced to quit the party. However, he had asserted that he had not taken a decision on the matter yet.

"I will not contest as an independent candidate. They (BJP) are forcing me to leave the party but I have not taken a decision on quitting. I will consult my supporters across the country," he had said on Tuesday.

Furthermore, he had also threatened to quit the party if he is denied ticket from his sitting North West Delhi Lok Sabha seat.

On Wednesday, Udit Raj quit the BJP to join the Rahul Gandhi-led Congress party in the national capital.

BJP has pitted Hans Raj Hans against Guggan Singh of the AAP and Rajesh Lilothia of the Congress. Hans Raj Hans joined the BJP in 2016 after ditching the Congress. The singer had contested elections on a Congress ticket.

Delhi will go to polls in the sixth phase on May 12. Counting of the votes will take place on May 23.
