Focussing the national capital's New Delhi constituency, BJP MP and Lok Sabha candidate, Meenakshi Lekhi speaks about the clear sweep win which the BJP foresees in Delhi as the competition between Congress and AAP increases, in an exclusive 'On the road' segment with Republic TV's Shivani Gupta on Saturday.
"While Sheila Dikshit is the tallest leader in Congress, she has been forced to come out of retirement and contest showing lack of leadership. While AAP may be making this election a centre vs state issue, Delhi people are smarter. The failure of the Congress-AAP alliance does not bother me as the competition is between them. We have won 52% of the votes in this constituency in 2014, while we got 38-40% in the rest of Delhi. We are striving for bipartisan politics in the centre with an NDA vs UPA situation. All the corrupt people are now hanging out together. Either you hang out together or be hanged together," she said.
Speaking on New Delhi specific issues, Lekhi said that under severe constraints, they have tried to achieve some of their schemes towards the welfare of the people.
"This constituency is a water-stressed area. Under the constraints, we (Centre) have tried t implement MUDRA, Jan Dhan and other schemes benefitting the people. A lot of disillusioned people who were previously supporting Congress and AAP are now working with the BJP. We don't have Ayushman Bharat which has raised the medical bills in this area where locals are literate but slightly impoverished. I have gone beyond my capacity as a councillor and done work. We came into politics to make the change that people with credibility should join politics to do the right thing. In this constituency, the previous MP Ajay Maken left 7.6 crores unspent and I ended up spending, which I gave a report to the AAP government which had pulled me up for overshooting my budget of 25 crores thus giving a false narrative to my work. They(AAP) should come out with their own report card showing their expenditure."
Lekhi is also involved filing a plea against Congress Chief Rahul Gandhi's comment 'Supreme Court ne kaha Chowkidar chor hai' which has forced Gandhi to file an affidavit clarifying his apology to the Supreme Court for attributing his comment to the apex body. Speaking on this issue, Lekhi said:
"How can some person holding a constitutional post do such a wrong and not understand justice? I felt this was the right time and narrative to take out the gas from their 'Chowkidar chor hai' campaign."
Speaking on the issues affecting this election, Lekhi spoke about the effect of the Triple Talaq bill and the work done by NDA for its passage.
"The work done by BJP to bring in the Triple Talaq law is resonating with the people. A woman is a member of the family. Apart from being a wife, she is a mother and a sister whose pain is felt by the people. The talaq issue is not a man vs woman issue as the divorce affects the men in the family, as their mother or sister is divorced."
Lekhi faces Congress two-time MP Ajay Maken and AAP's Brijesh Goyal who is the Convenor of the AAP Trade Wing (Trade and Industry) for the New Delhi constituency which goes to polls on May 12. Results will be announced on May 23.
