BJP's candidate from East Delhi Gautam Gambhir lashed out at AAP convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal while addressing a press briefing in the national capital.

Responding to the question on Arvind Kejriwal's statement that he wants to oust PM Modi-Amit Shah duo from the country in the election, the cricketer-turned-politician hit out the Delhi CM and said that the 'AAP chief is trying to join hands with that party (Congress) which he used to criticise and call corrupt earlier'.

"See, he has no vision for the state and for the country. He has a very negative vision. First, he criticizes the party, then says sorry to them. Now, at this time, he is out of apologies. We have been seeing how he is trying to join hands with that party, which he used to criticise and call corrupt before. He is contesting the election only to defeat Modi and Amit Shah. This vision is not going to work for the nation. This country has gone way ahead of negative politics," Gambhir said speaking to reporters.

Later on being asked about his views on the statehood for Delhi in the light of CM Kejriwal's consistent demand for statehood for the national capital, the BJP leader stated that development matters to him more than statehood. He further asserted that the Aam Aadmi Party is trying to 'hide its failure' behind the demand for statehood.

"For that does not matter much. For my development is more important. Delhi has seen development in the last few years. Earlier government have also run Delhi fairly well. It is not that only Aam Aadmi Party has run the Delhi government. Developmental works have been taking place earlier as well. If you don't have the intention to work then you raise the issue of statehood. 4.5 years ago, people did not know the issue of statehood. This is one political party which is trying to hide its failure behind the demand for statehood," Gambhir added.

Newly-appointed BJP leader Gambhir has replaced Maheish Girri, who is the sitting MP from his party from the constituency, as the party's candidate for East Delhi constituency. He is set to take on Arvinder Singh Lovely of the Congress and Atishi of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Delhi will see polling in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in the Phase 6 on May 12. Counting of votes will take place on May 23.
