A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi called out the Gandhi-Vadra family for considering themselves as 'Raja-Maharajas', the Rahul Gandhi-led party has accepted that the Gandhi family is the 'first family of India'.
Speaking to media on PM Modi's sensational exposure of the Gandhi-Vadra dynasty, Congress leader PC Chacko said that the country should feel 'obliged' to the Gandhi family, for it is only because of them that India is 'free' and 'self-sufficient'.
"PM Modi has negative opinion for the first family of India. The first family of India is truly the first family of India. India is obliged to them. PM Modi yesterday was speaking about achievements in the space. India is India today because of the planning and leadership of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. When India became free what as India's situation. Modi do not understand history. India was made self-sufficient through Green Revolution, White Revolution. Everything happened during Pt Nehru's time. His family's contribution in the Indian history can never be erased. But he is now out of context. Mr Modi can see that Rahul Gandhi, who hails from the same first family, will become the Prime Minister," PC Chacko said.
Earlier, responding to PM Modi's statement, Congress general-secretary Priyanka Gandhi had said:
"My family worked against the 'Raja-Maharajas' (princes and kings), removed their privy purses. My family never considered itself as a 'Raja-Maharaja'."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, while giving his first 2019 election interview to Republic Media Network's Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami, spoke about the delay in probing Gandhis and their son-in-law Robert Vadra, following which he exposed them for considering themselves as 'Raja-Maharajas'.
"India is a democracy. There is a legal system in India. These people get notices. After receiving notices, they need to respond to those notices. You'll be surprised to know that multiple notices went to the Congress party - multiple notices went in the national herald case. These people consider themselves raja -maharajas (royals). They don’t even respond. So we had to go to court. It is not easy to get dates from courts – that is the reason why it is taking so long. It is only after all this that they were forced to plead for bail in national herald case," PM Modi said in the interview.
