With there being just two weeks to go before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday set the poll agenda clear in an exclusive interview to Republic Media Network's Editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami. During the interview, PM Modi spoke on a wide range of issues encompassing crucial preceding events and opined on the current mood of the nation.
One of the topics he went into at-length was on the sensational extradition of Agusta Westland middleman Christian Michel and his subsequent questioning in India, as also, the Opposition's claims of 'political vendetta':
"It is not my job to accuse people. But this is clear that questions about corruption were raised on these issues before my government came in. But investigations were quashed. I came and said 'find the truth'. I haven't registered any case. These were there from the time before I came in. They were in the courts. So what should I do now? Should I also whitewash them? Or should I try to bring back Michel? I have brought him back. He is locked up in jail, he is giving the government information. More people are getting caught. The law will do its job," PM Modi said.
Certain details of Christian Michel's revelations have already come to light, including the sensational allegation, raised by Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad among others, regarding Michel also lobbying on behalf of the Eurofighter Typhoon at a stage in India's bid to acquire modern MMRCA fighters when the Dassault Rafale aircraft had already been selected in the tendering process. Raksha Mantri Nirmala Sitharaman, when asked on the development by Republic TV had added that the rival bid by the Eurofighter that had come in had been unsolicited. The revelation added another element of murkiness to the motive behind the Congress' Rafale crusade to highlight a scam in the deal between India and France.
