Just a day before the second phase of Lok Sabha election 2019, the state of Tamil Nadu has witnessed I-T raids conducted at various locations. In a raid at the Andippatti region of Madurai in the Theni district of Tamil Nadu, the I-T department seized a sum of 1.4 crore, cash packets with ward numbers, voters' name and other details written on them. Sources also said that each packet had Rs 300 in it. Videos accessed by Republic TV show hundreds of cash packets seized by the I-T department.
The raids that began from 9.30 pm on Tuesday and continued till Wednesday morning also witnessed clashes between the TTV Dinakaran's Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) and the police personnel. Sources have informed that the premises belonged to the cadres of AMMK.
In an attempt to stop the police personnel and I-T officials from conducting the raid, the party cadres allegedly clashed with the police, as a result of which the police fired in the sky to clear the way. Police also arrested four men and cases has been registered against 150 unidentified persons for stopping the officials from performing their duty. Almost 15 Income Tax officials went to the location on Tuesday night after getting information about the large amount of cash.
However, sources have said that the blame game in the state has begun following the cash haul, with the AMMK leaders saying that the cash belongs to AIADMK cadres.
On Tuesday, I-T department also raided the residences of DMK leader Kanimozhi in Tuticorin and DMK district secretary Geetha Jeevan. While Kanimozhi said that the BJP cannot prevent her success through income tax raid and termed it as anti-democractic and deliberately planned, her brother and DMK chief Stalin called it a political vendetta, citing that BJP TN chief Tamilisai Soundararajan's residence is not being raided.
For the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the AIADMK candidate for Theni constituency is P Ravindranath Kumar, the son of Tamil Nadu deputy chief minister O Pannerselvam, popularly known as OPS. The Congress candidate is senior leader EVKS Elangovan, a former state president of the Congress while the AMMK has fielded Thanga Tamilselvan, diqualified MLA from the Andipatti.
The Election Commission also decided to cancel the Lok Sabha election in Tamil Nadu's Vellore on Tuesday after large sums of cash was seized from a DMK candidate's office a few days ago. The rest of the constituencies goes to poll on April 18.
