In a surprising twist to Tamil Nadu State elections, Superstar Rajinikanth has announced on Friday while interacting with the media outside his residence, that he will contest in the Tamil Nadu State  Assembly elections in case the government fails to get a majority and gets dissolved after May 23rd.

"I understand their enthusiasm. I will not let them down."

Bye-elections in 18 constituencies in Tamil Nadu is currently in progress on Friday, whose results are expected on May 23. On the issue of protests and violence during the elections he said:

"It has reduced from the previous years. They (EC) have definitely organized it well, without a doubt."

"That will be seen to by the EC. I do not wish to comment on it."

"I am ever ready to face the polls", he said when asked if he was prepared to face any opposition in case of a change in the government, post the bye-elections.
