In a surprising twist to Tamil Nadu State elections, Superstar Rajinikanth has announced on Friday while interacting with the media outside his residence, that he will contest in the Tamil Nadu State Assembly elections in case the government fails to get a majority and gets dissolved after May 23rd.
Speaking about his eager fans who have vowed to vote for him whenever he decides to contest, Super Star Rajnikanth said:
"I understand their enthusiasm. I will not let them down."
Bye-elections in 18 constituencies in Tamil Nadu is currently in progress on Friday, whose results are expected on May 23. When asked about the launch of his party, he said that will be launched whenever the Assembly polls were to be held, repeating that he will announce his party's launch and plan after the results are declared on May 23.
"That will be decided after the anouncement of results on May 23."
Questioning whether there is a possibility that Narendra Modi would be re-elected as Prime Minister, he said that it will be revealed on May 23.
On the issue of protests and violence during the elections he said:
"It has reduced from the previous years. They (EC) have definitely organized it well, without a doubt."
Reacting to the recent 'cash-for-votes' trend rampant in Tamil Nadu and the multiple IT raids around Tamil Nadu, he refused to comment on EC's work.
"That will be seen to by the EC. I do not wish to comment on it."
"I am ever ready to face the polls", he said when asked if he was prepared to face any opposition in case of a change in the government, post the bye-elections.
Rajnikanth, who had announced his plans to join politics in December 2017, is yet to launch his party. Following this, Rajnikanth's on-screen rival Kamal Haasan too launched his party, Makkal Needhi Mayyam (MNM) and has fielded candidates in the ongoing Tamil Nadu bye-elections.
The currently ongoing bye-elections will decide if the AIADMK will retain its majority in 234-seat state Assembly. Bye-polls for the four more Assembly polls will be held on May 19. And results will be announced concurrently to the Lok Sabha polls on May 23.
