Update: Raids underway at the school and college owned by Kathir Anand, son of Durai Murugan and DMK Vellore candidate.
The Election Commission is conducting raids at the residence of senior leader and DMK treasurer Durai Murugan's residence at Vellore district on Saturday. Durai Murugan is a close aide of the party chief MK Stalin.
His son Kathir Anand is contesting from Vellore parliamentary constituency this time.
The EC had arrived at 11.30 pm on Thursday with an Income Tax official however they had to leave. The legal team of Durai Murugan had argued with the officials on the grounds that they did not have proper documents for the search. Following that the officials left the place.
A new team arrived around 3.00 am and began the raid. The Election Commission officials (District Election Officer and Flying Squad) assisted by an Income Tax Assistant Commissioner are at the location. Sources have said that the EC was acting based on some information.
The EC had sought help from the Income Tax officials.
IT sources say the District Election Officer (DEO) requested for assistance. So a nodal officer and three staffs from the department are on the search.
Income department officials say it is not a full-fledged IT raid. But they are helping the DEO and EC officials since they requested
The DMK has will contest in Lok Sabha elections in coalition with Congress and several other parties.
Out of the 39 seats in Tamil Nadu, DMK will contest in 20 seats, leaving 9 seats for the Congress.
As for Puducherry, Stalin will support Rahul Gandhi's party as he has left the only seat for the Congress. In total, DMK will contest in 20 out of the 40 seats, while the Congress will fight from 10 seats in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
