  • PM Modi has slammed former FM P Chidambaram and his son Karti, accusing the Congress of loot
  • The Prime Minister was speaking at a rally in Tamil Nadu's Theni

Taking on former Finance Minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram for their alleged involvement in the INX Media-Aircel Maxis cases via veiled references, PM Narendra Modi on Saturday said that whenever there is a Congress government, they always loot, in a rally in Theni, Tamil Nadu.

"What all have we witnessed? Father becomes the Finance Minister and his son loots the country. Whenever they (Congress) are in power they always loot," he said.

PM Modi also referred to Republic TV's sensational Poshan Aahar Scam newsbreak wherein dairy notings recovered from the I-T raids conducted on close aides of the Congress party showed that the grand old party diverted funds meant for government schemes to its leaders ahead of 2019 elections. Terming it 'the Tughlaq road scandal', PM Modi claimed that the Madhya Pradesh government had become Congress' ATM.

The Madhya Pradesh government has become their ATM. They are diverting the money meant for the children and the poor for using in their election campaign. This has become known as the Tughlaq road scandal," he added.

Former FM P Chidambaram's son Karthi Chidambaram is the Congress candidate for the Sivaganga constituency in Tamil Nadu. The seat is currently held by the AIADMK's PR Senthilanathan who stormed to victory in 2014 with almost double the number of votes of his nearest challenger - the DMK's Durai Subha. For the 2019 polls, H Raja is the combined BJP-AIADMK candidate while Karti Chidambaram is the Congress-DMK contender.

The state has witnessed tremendous political flux in the last few years, with its two biggest political leaders - Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi - passing away. In 2014, Jayalalithaa-led AIADMK had emerged not only as the biggest party in Tamil Nadu but also the third biggest party in the country with 37 seats.

The Tamil Nadu Lok Sabha elections for all 39 constituencies are scheduled in a single phase on April 18. The results of the Lok Sabh election is scheduled on May 23.
