In a video, Makkal Needhi Maiam chief Kamal Haasan remembering the police firing in Tuticorin district during the anti-Sterlite protests that claimed 13 lives made an appeal to people to "remove" the politicians who "instigated the violence" on May 23, 2018.
The actor-turned-politician in the video narrated a story wherein he said that he met the family of Mr. Kaliappan, who was shot dead in the firing in Ottapidaram.
Furthermore, sharing the conversation he stated that May 23 should not be the "death anniversary" but should be the day when politicians are removed even from "our thoughts"
In the video, he said:
You are probably wondering why this video? This video is to thank the people for accepting me as one amongst them and for their warm reception.
I know you don't expect just gratitude from me, hence I would also like to share certain incidents that impacted me greatly during the places where I was welcomed. This video is for that as well.
When I was in Ottapidaram, I was invited to Mr. Kaliappan's house. But he wasn't at home. Why? Because on 22nd May 2018 an incident happened (refers to Tuticorin open fire) Mr Kaliappan was shot dead, day after the horrible incident took place (23rd May 2018) when he was on the way to collect his salary.
Kaliappan's sister - My brother is no more. Can you imagine how I feel? He was murdered in cold blood.
Kaliappan's mother - The counting falls on his first year death anniversary.
Kaliappan's sister - He just wanted to collect his salary and my brother was shot dead. Instead of shooting the culprits of Pollachi incident, why did they shoot him? Is this fair? You tell me. What will we do without him? You tell me. My mother and her relatives have brothers. Only me and my sister alone don't have a brother. Will my brother come back to us?
Is there anything wrong in her question? I wasn't able to answer her question.
But, those who instigated the violence, those who are the reason for this incident, are pretending as though no such incident happened and are shamelessly begging for votes in the very same constituency.
In the upcoming By-Elections, remove these selfish politicians and get ready for change.
May 23rd should not just be his death anniversary, we must change it to the day we removed these politicians even from our thoughts.
I have fixed the television that was broken as a result of my anger. And as a result of your anger, if you change those who need to be changed, our entire country will change.
Thirteen people were killed in police firing on May 22 and 23 after protests for closure of the plant over pollution concerns turned violent in that port city.
Haasan was recently at the centre of a raging row over his Hindu extremist remarks, on Friday when he said “every religion has its own terrorists” and that no one claim to be sanctimonious.
