In a last-ditch attempt to save face over allegations of minority appeasement to do with its Telangana election manifesto, the Congress has made one stunning change in its latest draft.

Whereas in the earlier draft the Congress had proposed hospitals catering exclusively to the Muslim community, the new draft, also accessed by Republic TV, contains a single amendment -- the line has been changed to "more hospitals accessible to minorities".

The controversy comes to light after the draft of the Congress' manifesto in the poll-bound state, which is to be released by party president Rahul Gandhi, spoke about implementing various measures for 'Muslims only', including schools and hospitals, and also, free electricity for Mosques.

Here are the seven promises made by the Congress party in its previous draft catering to the needs of minorities, and specifically, the Muslim community:

  1. Minority youth will be given special consideration in government contracts
  2. Poor Muslim students will be provided with a financial assistance up to Rs 20 lakhs
  3. Special residential schools for Muslim students
  4. Special Urdu DSC for Minorities (District Selection Committee for the recruitment of teachers) will be announced
  5. Hospitals exclusively for Muslims will be established (amended to "More hospitals accessible to minorities")
  6. Strict legal action against private firms which refuse employment on the basis of religion
  7. Free power supply to Mosques and Churches

The controversy comes to light amid a fierce battle between the Congress and KCR-led TRS for the Telangana state which goes to polls on December 7. Earlier, addressing an election rally in the state, Sonia Gandhi had made a metaphor referring to herself as the state's 'Mother', and credited former PM Manmohan Singh, Rahul Gandhi and herself for having made the 'difficult decision' to carve the state out of Andhra Pradesh.

She went on to accuse CM KCR or only working to enrich his family. However, addressing a rally in Nizamabad on Tuesday, PM Modi alleged that the Congress and the TRS were playing a 'fixed-match' in Telangana.

This is also not the first time that the Congress has been caught extolling appeasement in the ongoing elections. In a video accessed by Republic TV, senior Congress leader Kamal Nath had, about 2 months earlier, held a closed-doors meeting with Muslim leaders in Madhya Pradesh where he had resolved that if the Congress doesn't get 90% of the Muslim vote in Madhya Pradesh, the party is finished.
