Campaign and Controversy

Riding the crest of a Modi wave, the BJP demolished the communist citadel of Tripura in 2018 assembly polls by winning a two-thirds majority with ally IPFT. While PM Modi in his rally had claimed that a spate of development projects in the state would turn Tripura into the best state in the country, the Congress and the CPI-M MPs of the state and the Tripura Student Federation (TSF) protested against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill throughout the election season.

Key Contest:

Tripura West: The BJP candidate from this seat was Pratima Bhowmick who won against former BJP vice president Subal Bhowmick who joined the Congress by a margin of 305689 votes. Sitting Left MP, CPIM's  Shankar Prasad Dutta was also in contention. Brishketu Debbarman who is an MLA also contested in an IPFT ticket.
