One of the most high-profile Lok Sabha seats in the electorally crucial Uttar Pradesh, Gorakhpur is considered a stronghold for the Bharatiya Janata Party, with UP CM Yogi Adityanath, who is the Mahant of Gorakhnath Math, winning the constituency in five consecutive elections and representing the constituency in the Lok Sabha from 1998 to 2017, following which it was sensationally won by the SP-BSP combine in the ensuing bypoll..

The 2019 Lok Sabha polls witnessed competition between key candidates Ravi Kishan of BJP, Madhusudan Tripathi of Congress and Ram Bhual Nishad of SP for the Gorakhpur constituency.

As things stand, BJP candidate and actor-turned-politician Ravi Kishan has won from the Gorakhpur constituency in his inaugural election battle against Congress' Madhusudan Tripathi and Samajwadi Party's Ram Bhual Nishad. While it was a fierce triangular battle between BJP, Congress and Samajwadi Party (backed by BSP) in the constituency, Ravi Kishan’s vote-count at the time of publishing shows him winning 60.54 percent votes.

The 2019 polls witnessed a massive campaign by the Bhojpuri films star and electoral debutant who joined BJP in 2017, with UP CM Yogi Adityanath and Union Minister Smriti campaigning for him across the constituency.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, Yogi Adityanath had defeated SP’s Rajmati Nishad by winning 51.80 percent of the votes cast in the constituency. Yogi Adityanath later resigned as Gorakhpur MP in 2017 after he was elected the Chief Minister of the state. In the by-poll elections following the resignation of Adityanath, Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party jointly fielded Praveen Nishad from the seat, putting aside years of enmity for the political experiment. The test proved to be successful as Praveen Kumar Nishad won Gorakhpur. However, in a shock for the SP-BSP alliance in UP, Praveen Nishad joined the BJP weeks ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. After joining the Saffron party, Praveen Nishad was pitted from Sant Kabir Nagar as the BJP candidate.
