Lucknow has been a Bharatiya Janata Party bastion ever since the tenth Lok Sabha election in 1991. It is among the BJP's strongest-held and most important seats in the state, and that becomes even more evident given that it is the seat of Home Minister Rajnath Singh who is also contesting this time around. However, he faced a big challenge, namely Samajwadi Party's (with BSP support) Poonam Sinha, who is the wife of former BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha, and Congress candidate Acharya Pramod Krishnam.

Results:

Union Home Minister and BJP candidate Rajnath Singh has won the Lucknow seat with a margin of 3,47,302 votes. His nearest rival was Poonam Sinha of Samajwadi Party.

Campaign and Controversy:

There was a controversy during campaigning after former BJP leader and current Congress candidate from Patna Sahib Shatrughan Sinha was seen canvassing for Poonam Sinha rather than his own party candidate Acharya Pramod Krishnam.

While addressing the media Acharya Krishnam requested Mr Sinha to "fulfil the duty towards his party". However, the matter escalated when Shatrughan Sinha made it clear that for him 'family comes first than party'.

On the other hand, local BJP leaders, during Rajnath Singh’s nomination road-show, described the Home Minister to be carrying forward the legacy of late former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee who had also held the constituency.

“I am your MP and a candidate again. You know me well, I don’t need to say more,” Rajnath Singh on one occasion, exuding confidence of a huge win from Lucknow.

2014 Lok Sabha Elections:

The 2014 Lok Sabha elections were contested on developmental issues, especially infrastructure, including electricity, waterworks and roads. Along with the above stated problems, development and growth of industry, employment generation, corruption, economic growth acceleration and the safety of women had dominated the election manifestos for Lucknow.

In 2014, Rajnath Singh won the election by a resounding 5,61,106 votes, defeating Rita Bahuguna Joshi by a margin of 2,72,749 votes. In third place, Nakul Dubey won a total of 64,449 votes.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee had been contesting from Lucknow since 1991 till 2004. In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, BJP’s Lalji Tandon won the elections with 2,04,028 votes continuing the BJP winning streak.
