Sticking up for the derogatory remarks made by his party leader Azam Khan, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has out to defend the 'khaki' below the belt comment on BJP's Jaya Prada.
Instead of apologising for the comment that has been condemned by politicians from across the political spectrum including Union Minister Smriti Irani, senior Congress leader Sheila Dixit, Priyanka Gandhi and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, Yadav stated that Khan 'did not name anyone', further batted for his party's ideology towards women.
He said, "Remember Azam Khan was on stage a while ago. He said that some people wear RSS cloths. He was pointing out at someone else. We are Samajwadi people. We do not use language that hurt our women and children. We, Samajwadi people can never do that. But we don't know, we need to be aware of these people, they might flip at any (unclear). Sometimes what they show is wrong. This is their helplessness. this is not our fight. "
Senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader and former minister Azam Khan on Sunday made a below the belt 'khaki' comment on Jaya Prada, who is contesting the Lok Sabha poll from in Rampur on the BJP ticket.
"I brought her (Jaya Prada) to Rampur. You are a witness that I did not allow anyone to touch her body. It took you 17 years to identify her real face but I got to know in 17 days that she wears khaki underp****," said Khan while addressing an election rally here.
Khan, who is in the fray from Rampur on the SP ticket, made the obnoxious remark in the presence of former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and other senior party leaders, who were present on the dais.
In her election rally in Fatehpur Sikri, Priyanka Vadra asked why the parties that swear by the secular fabric of the nation kept quiet when comments were being made on a woman.
"When someone from your party gave a wrong statement on a woman, why didn't you make them recall the tradition of this country?"
Former CM of Delhi Sheila Dikshit also expressed her displeasure over the disgusting comment by the leader. She said:
"Whatever he (Azam Khan) has done, it is wrong, absolutely wrong. In our country women have been treated equally like men. There have been the women like Indira Gandhi the best of all Prime Ministers ever. And now Priyanka is also in politics. So this is a country where women are equal to men. In politics and elsewhere. Women never say or comment on actions by men or tell them what to do what not to do. Both are the part of the same society. Whatever he (Azam Khan) has said, is wrong and I condemn each word."
Speaking to media, Smriti Irani said that politics and respect for women are two different things and must be kept apart.
"Lewd comments were being made on a woman and all the leaders of Samajwadi Party were sitting idle on the stage. They were listening quietly to whatever was being said. They must know that politics and respect for women are two different things. Today, people who were sitting idle and did not break their silence on such a lewd comment will have to give their answer to the society, that is politics greater than a woman's dignity and respect in current times."
