As the trends of Lok Sabha elections poured in, all eyes were set onto Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi, a traditional Congress bastion, where BJP had fielded Union textile minister Smriti Irani against Congress president Rahul Gandhi. Though Gandhi conceded defeat much before the actual counting was over for the constituency, Irani chose to speak to the country only after the sealed figures by the EC was in. As the BJP crossed the majority mark consecutively for the second time, the results were in that Irani has breached the Gandhi bastion of Amethi.
The Amethi battle in which Irani gave a tough contest to the Congress president till the last minute of the counting, took to Twitter a day after and said that it's a new morning for the people of the constituency and thanked the voters for their support.
In this election, BJP fielded Union Minister Smriti Irani against three times sitting MP and Congress president Rahul Gandhi. While Irani aims to dethrone the Congress chief from his stronghold, Rahul Gandhi is trying to retain his seat in 2019 polls.
Rahul was a three-time MP from the constituency and the Congress party had always won in Amethi except for two times - during the 1977 elections when Janata Party's Ravindra Pratap Singh won and during 1999 elections when BJP's Dr. Sanjay Sinh won.
After registering a historic victor, Irani spoke to Republic TV and said that she is thankful to the people for their love and support:
"I am grateful that honourable Prime Minister gave me an opportunity to bring development irrespective of losing from here for the past five years under his leadership. I am honoured that my party deemed me fit contest from Amethi yet again and I am extremely grateful to Yogiji because in consonance with the Centre and Narendra bhai, he managed to do so much work as a CM. Instead of giving me credit, one should give credit to my organisation and Swayamsevak who worked day and night to ascertain that this victory was ascertained in Amethi.
She then said that the people of Amethi can shower their love but what they lacked was a working MP. "They saw me working and now then they judged me gave this mandate, I am happy that it is so positive. There are many works to be done and I have given my word to the people that these 5 years will lead them to development. "she added.
"I wish Rahul Gandhi works for the development of the people of Wayanad and under the leadership of Narendra Modi we all together make the country prosperous," she said when asked to give a message to Rahul Gandhi.
Amethi went to polls in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha polls on April 29 amid the charges of 'booth-rigging' by Smriti Irani and the sitting MP being absent from the constituency during the polls. With Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s entry in the political fray as the party’s General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh East, Amethi witnessed high-pitched and heated election campaigning from the newly-inducted member of the Congress party. This election season, Priyanka Gandhi seemed to be more concerned about Amethi, all thanks to the strong competition from Smriti Irani and consistent attacks at Rahul Gandhi, alleging lack of developmental programs by the MP, and jibes at him over his absence from the constituency in the past 15 years of him being in the office.
