Congress president Rahul Gandhi conceded his defeat from Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, while addressing a press conference on May 23 while the counting of votes was underway.
Addressing the press briefing, the Congress president congratulated Smriti Irani on winning Amethi and said that he respects the decision of the people of Amethi.
"On the results of Amethi, I would like to say that Smriti Irani has won. I would like to congratulate her. I respect the decision of Amethi. This is a democracy. I would like Smriti Irani to take care of Amethi with love," Rahul Gandhi said.
He further congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party over the party's victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections
"I had said it in the campaign that 'Janta Malik hai' (People are the masters) and the people have clearly given their decision. The people have given direction. Firstly, I would like to congratulate Narendra Modiji, BJP. I would like to thank the Congress candidates who fought the elections with full valour. Our fight is the fight of ideology. Frankly, today is the not the day to discuss what I think went wrong because people of India have clearly decided that Narendra Modi is going to be their Prime Minister and as an Indian, I respect that," he added.
Meanwhile, immediately after the press briefing Rahul Gandhi offered to resign from his post as the president of the Indian National Congress. However, Sonia Gandhi and other leaders have convinced Rahul Gandhi not to resign. Furthermore, the working committee meeting has been called within a week for the final decision.
Amethi is known to be a Congress bastion with Rahul Gandhi serving at the MP for three consecutive terms. However, In 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Union Minister Smriti Irani is emerging as the winner of the Amethi Parliamentary seat leading with 311992 votes against Rahul Gandhi with 273543 (18:22 PM), as per the trends by Election Commission.
