A desperate Congress seems to be resorting to sharing space with fringe elements while campaigning for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid on Thursday shared campaigning space in Farrukhabad in Uttar Pradesh with Sher Singh Rana who is a murder convict in the Phoolan Devi case. Rana who is out on bail since 2016 was earlier in the news for protesting against the movie 'Padmavat'.
On Thursday, Khurshid joined Rana's rally in his constituency.
Salman Khurshid was also in a controversy for challenging UP CM Yogi Adityanath for a debate in a Gaushala on the Batla issue.
The Congress has been on backfoot since PM Narendra Modi's Varanasi roadshow in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday which saw a massive turnout.
On Friday, it appeared that there was an infighting in the party after it announced that Ajay Rai, and not Priyanka Gandhi will be contesting against PM Narendra Modi.
Rahul Gandhi's aide Sam Pitroda blamed Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for backing out from contesting in Varanasi against PM Narendra Modi, Congress insider Rajeev Shukla has given it away that it was indeed the party president who had decided to not field her in the holy city.
Shukla during a media briefing a couple of hours after Pitroda's statement refuted him saying that it was the Congress president who had decided to not field her from the constituency.
"If you remember, she had said since day one that she wanted to fight in Varanasi and said that it was Rahul Gandhi decision. The Congress president decided that the former contestant Ajay Rai who had worked for five years must be given an opportunity to contest. She had said at every platform that the Congress president who will decide to fight."
