The AICC General Sectrary Priyanka Gandhi has announced that she is willing to contest from the Varanasi constituency, but with the consent of her party president, in a political fray against PM Modi.

Pinning the responsibility of her candidature on sibling and Congress president Rahul Gandhi, the Congress leader stated that she would be "happy to contest", showing her willingness over the Uttar Pradesh's constituency.

She said, "If my Congress president tells me to contest I'll be happy to contest."

Murmurs of the political scoop that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra could be fielded by the Congress party against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the battle for the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat were heard last week.

According to sources, a camp within the Congress party had exhorted that the new official entrant of the Gandhi family should take on PM Modi in his home turf, to which Priyanka Vadra had concurred.

Additionally, as per sources, senior UP Congress leader Raj Babbar had confirmed in an off-record briefing that Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu had also advised Congress president Rahul Gandhi to declare Priyanka Gandhi as the joint-Opposition candidate and that ally NCP also concurred.

The political buzz from Congress camp is that the SP-BSP alliance should support Priyanka Vadra if she does contest from Varanasi.

Earlier on April 11, 2019, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Thursday filed her nomination papers from the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh. As she filed her nomination, her daughter and Uttar Pradesh Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi took to Twitter to post a message for the UPA chairperson.

"Every candidate, every politician, should learn from my mother's devotion towards the people of Rae Bareli. The motive of politics is public service and dedication. Whoever gets this opportunity, should be thankful to the people," she wrote on Twitter.

BJP will have bigwigs contesting from the state of Uttar Pradesh, including PM Modi from Varanasi, while Home Minister Rajnath Singh will be contending from the state capital and Union Minister Smriti Irani from Amethi, a Congress bastion in yet another political tussle with Congress president Rahul Gandhi.
