In a strange pitch for asking for votes, Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday while addressing a rally in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh made a sensational charge at Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party saying that the parties can be controlled by PM Narendra Modi and but not Rahul Gandhi or the Congress.
He slammed the leaders of both the parties - Akhilesh Yadav (SP) and Mayawati (BSP) saying they can be easily influenced by PM Narendra Modi. He was addressing a rally amidst the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
"The controller of Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav is in the hands of Narendra Modi remember that. Modi can pressurise the BSP and SP but not me as they have a history. In 2019, Congress will defeat Narendra Modi. He did not say BSP-mukt Bharat or SP-mukt Bharat because we had challenged him," he said.
Earlier on Wednesday, in a statement signaling defeat, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said that the party's candidates in UP will cut BJP's votes (and not gathbandhan's) where they lack chances of winning.
"BJP will lose badly in Uttar Pradesh. Where our candidates are strong they will win, where they are weak they will cut votes of BJP," she said.
Both the statements by the siblings which urge voters to choose the Congress in opposition to the SP-BSP-RLD coalition and the BJP.
It appears that Congress is spooked about its chances for the elections in Uttar Pradesh. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra who had earlier said that she will contest in Varanasi against PM Narendra Modi seemed to have backed away from the contest. The Congress fielded Ajay Rai from Varanasi.
The announcement had just ahead of PM Modi's mega-roadshow in the constituency. The roadshow had attracted a huge crowd leading to question if there was indeed a Modi wave in 2019.
PM Modi ahead of filing his nomination papers for the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat on Friday, April 26 carried out a 7-km mega roadshow which saw a massive turnout.
The roadshow began from the Malviya statue at 3 pm and ended at the Dashashwamedha Ghat, following which the Prime Minister participated in Ganga Aarti.
