A day after Home Ministry clarified on the Congress party's claim over an alleged 'sniper threat' to party president Rahul Gandhi’s life, Union Minister Smriti Irani has taken a dig at him, saying that 'a man who is scared by lasers, cannot lead the nation'.

While interacting with the reporters on Thursday, Smriti Irani took a jibe at Rahul Gandhi, giving an example of PM Modi's 2014 Bihar rally wherein the crowd were fearlessly present at PM's rally even as a bomb exploded nearby.

“In 2014, at a Bihar rally, when PM Narendra Modi was speaking, bombs were exploding nearby and he faced it without any fear. The crowds were also fearless by participating in the rally and listening to him. Then every child in this country knows who is the country’s lion. One who is afraid of a light (laser) cannot shoulder the leadership of a nation,” the Union Minister said.

On Wednesday, while interacting with the media after filing his nomination at Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, a laser was focussed on Rahul Gandhi’s body several times. This prompted the Congress party to write to the Ministry of Home Affairs(MHA) citing a 'sniper threat' to their party president.

Releasing statement on Thursday, MHA clarified that they did not receive any such letter from the Congress, and after going through video clip raised by the party, the Director (SPG) informed the ministry that the "green light" shown in the video was found to be that of the mobile phone used by the AICC photographer.

"Director (SPG) has informed MHA that they have gone through the Video Clipping of the incident very closely. The “green light” shown in the clipping was found to be that of a mobile phone used by the AICC photographer, who was videographing the impromptu press interaction of Shri Rahul Gandhi near the collectorate at Amethi.  Director (SPG) has also informed MHA that this position was conveyed to the personal staff of Shri Rahul Gandhi.  Dir (SPG) has confirmed that there was no security implication whatsoever," said the MHA spokesperson.

Meanwhile, Smriti Irani is contesting against Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who is fighting from his traditional bastion Uttar Pradesh's Amethi in the Lok Sabha elections.
Amethi will be going to polls in the fifth phase of elections on May 6. The 2019 Lok Sabha Elections will be held from April 11 to May 19 in seven phases, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 23. The results of the Lok Sabha polls will also be declared on May 23.
