As the Lok Sabha elections are inching closer, Union Minister Smriti Irani addressed a massive rally in Uttar Pradesh's Badhohi wherein she launched an all-out attack on the Congress party.
Referring to the 2007 affidavit filed by the UPA-led government in the Supreme Court entre alleging that there was no historical evidence to establish the existence of Lord Ram or the other characters in Ramayana, Smriti Irani lashed out at the Congress party for pretending to be 'Ram Bhakts'.
Addressing the rally, Smriti Irani called out the Congress party-led Rahul Gandhi saying the leaders of the party who had filed an affidavit in the court to prove that Lord Ram doesn't exist, are now around pretending to be followers of Lord Ram.
"Today such a situation has occurred in Uttar Pradesh that the Congress which had filed an affidavit in the court that there is no evidence of Lord Ram's existence, today the leaders of the same party are roaming around being 'Ram Bhakts'," Smriti Irani said in Uttar Pradesh rally.
Referring to the Ramayana, the affidavit had said there is no "historical record" to incontrovertibly prove the existence of the character, or the occurrences of the events, depicted therein, as per reports. The Sethusamudram project began in 2004 under the UPA regime and had proposed to create a shipping channel by dredging a walkway connecting India and Sri Lanka.
Later she slammed the Congress party over their ways to woo the Hindu voters by visiting temples and wearing Janaue, while earlier they had been referring to Hindus as 'terrorists'.
"The new generation of the Congress party which had time to roam around foreign countries, today they are visiting temples. The Congress party which earlier used to say that Hindus are terrorists, today they are roaming across wearing 'Janaeu'," she added. In an affidavit filed before the apex court, the Archaeological Survey of India rejected the claim of the existence of the Ram Sethu bridge in the area where the project was under construction.
Meanwhile, Congress general-secretary from UP East Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is all set to embark upon another political campaign from Ayodhya from March 27, during which she will offer prayers at the famous Hanuman Garhi Temple in the historic city.
Ahead of her visit, the local Congress workers have put up banners welcoming Priyanka to the city of Lord Ram. In the poster, Priyanka can be seen of the left side, with Lord Ram's photo placed in the middle, while Congress president Rahul Gandhi is placed on the right side.
