In the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls, Union Minister and BJP's Amethi candidate Smriti Irani set an example amidst the heated campaigning of the political parties. On Sunday, while campaigning for her party in Amethi, Irani helped doused a bush fire that caught a wheat farm.
The visuals that were captured by media persons present for Irani's rally shows her walking along with the farmers to help put off the fire. Three-to four farms in the villages caught bush fire and drinking water, food was not available on Sunday.
The video shows the Union Minister covering her mouth with a cloth while going to douse the fire along with others. She asked the women to take the children away from the area. She instructed the men to bring more buckets of water. When things seemed out of control, she used a hand-pump to draw water and kept filling buckets of water until the fire was brought under control.
Following the incident, Irani called the SDM of Amethi and reprimanded him for his laxity.
Irani called the SDM's office and said: "In Amethi village, drinking water and food is not available and SDM is busy in election duty. But people cannot die to the elections. In times of emergency, officers are taking so much time to respond. I am standing here, you aren't here. How are you preparing for it? On phone?"
She then called the High Commissioner and said: "He is waiting for the VIP. VIP is to serve people, not to leave them. I am here. A union minister has time to cancel all her rallies and campaigning to help people, and SDM says will come in two hours. The manual of procedure does not allow you to siting office while people die. I will report this in writing sir."
Smriti Irani is contesting against Congress chief Rahul Gandhi from the Congress bastion of Amethi. Elections in Uttar Pradesh are taking place in all seven phases and counting will take place on May 23
