Union Minister for Textile and BJP candidate for Amethi in the Lok Sabha polls performed a 'pooja' on Thursday along with her husband Zubin Irani before she files her nomination for the Amethi constituency on the same day. Rahul Gandhi had filed his nomination in Amethi on Wednesday.

BJP Leader Smriti Irani will lock horns with Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who is fighting from his traditional bastion Uttar Pradesh's Amethi in the Lok Sabha elections.

On Tuesday, Smriti Irani had hit out at Rahul Gandhi saying that he lacked vision and his 'absenteeism' in Amethi which lead to no development. 

"Despite having a vision, there is a question mark on his efficiency as the nation knows the condition of Amethi. On one hand, there is an efficient government which has taken a resolution to build a 'New India', on the other there is a man who stays restricted to making announcements. When it comes to the reality of his own constituency, people get to know that despite being an MP for so long he has not been able to develop it," she said to reporters.

Currently, phase-1 of Lok Sabha polls is underway in 20 states and Union territories with 1285 candidates contesting 91 seats in 1,69,400 polling centres on April 11, Thursday.
Polling in all the Lok Sabha constituencies of Andhra Pradesh (25), Telangana (17), Uttarakhand (5), Meghalaya (2) and Arunachal Pradesh (2) besides lone seats in Mizoram, Tripura,Manipur, Nagaland, Sikkim, Andaman and Nicobar, and Lakshadweep is being held.

Eight seats in Uttar Pradesh, seven in Maharashtra, six in Bihar, five in Assam, four in Odisha, two each in Jammu and Kashmir and West Bengal and one seat in Chhattisgarh are also going to polls.

Amethi will be going to polls in the fifth phase of elections on May 6. The 2019 Lok Sabha Elections will be held from April 11 to May 19 in seven phases, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 23. The results of the Lok Sabha polls will also be declared on May 23.
