2019 Lok Sabha Election Results for Asansol, West Bengal: Encore for BJP's Babul Supriyo, Trinamool's Moon Moon Sen defeated

In one of the most keenly watched Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee’s turf’s Asansol witnessed a high-profile competition between BJP’s star candidate and sitting MP Babul Supriyo and Trinamool’s actress-turned-politician and incumbent MP from Bankura, Moon Moon Sen.

As per the vote-count declared by the Election Commission, BJP's sitting MP Babul Supriyo has retained his Lok Sabha seat of West Bengal's Asansol by winning 6,32,727 votes with a margin of 15.97 percent against the Trinamool's Moon Moon Sen who emerged at the second spot with 35.19 votes. 

Communist Party of India (Marxist)'s Gouranga Chatterjee manage to secure only 7.08 percent vote-share. 

After winning the Asansol seat, Babul Supriyo took to Twitter to thank the people who trusted him and voted for him. 

Poll campaign and controversies:

2019 Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal kickstarted with several constituencies witnessing huge poll violence during the process of voting in all the seven phases. Asansol, which went to polls in the fourth phase of the elections on April 29, also saw huge clashes between Trinamool and BJP, damage to Supriyo’s vehicle, lathicharge by the police forces on the polling day, with the rival parties levying allegations against each other for the violence.

In the 2019 polls, key contenders for Asansol seat have been BJP’s Babul Supriyo, Trinamool’s Moon Moon Sen, CPI-M’s Gouranga Chatterjee and Congress’ Biswarup Mondal.

Historical trend:

Historically a stronghold for the Communist Party, Asansol was won by Babul Supriyo in 2014 Lok Sabha elections, by defeating Trinamool’s Dola Sen by a margin of 70 thousand votes. Internal rift between the Trinamool (then Trinamool Congress) workers helped Babul win the Lok Sabha constituency and create history in Mamata’s turf. Asansol parliamentary constituency was apparently one of the two seats won by BJP in the 2014 Lok Sabha election in West Bengal.

While a popular face Moon Moon Sen had been pitted against Babul, Trinamool has never won from Asansol in the previous election, which proved a grave competition to the candidate.

With ex-MLA Gouranaga Chatterjee, CPI(M) also tried to retain its hold on the constituency. Notably, Congress candidate Biswarup Mondal also could not garner the public support in the elections.
