Mamata Banerjee's nephew Abhishek Banerjee's wife Rujira Naroola had filed a petition in Calcutta High Court about her appearance before Kolkata customs officials which has been rejected. She had filed a plea saying that she does want to appear in the customs office.
However, the High Court on Thursday directed her to appear on April 8 before Kolkata customs office, adding that there will be no coercion or arrest from the officials.
She was held at Kolkata airport by the customs officials on March 15-16 allegedly for carrying gold without declaration and let off after Kolkata police's intervention.
On Wednesday, the Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a showcause notice to Naroola and called her to explain why she made false representation and concealed material facts while submitting documents before the authorities to get her OCI and PAN card.
The notice was sent by Foreigners Division says that if Naroola does not reply in 15 days from the date of the issue of the notice and the Centre would take appropriate decision on the matter.
The notice said that Naroola was issued the PIO card which mentioned Niphon Naroola as her father, However when she applied for the conversion of her PIO card to OCI card in 2017 the supporting documents she provided was her marriage certificate (issued in 2013) which mentioned Gursharan Singhas her father.
The notice also said that Naroola holds a PAN card as an Indian national, whereas she is a foreign national with an OCI card. It said she applied for a PAN card by filing a form 49A without disclosing her real status as Thai national holding an OCI card and mentioning Gursharan Singh her father. She was supposed to fill up the 49AA form to get the PAN card by declaring herself as a foreigner holding an OCI card.
It also said that her OCI card is liable to be cancelled under the Citizenship Act, 1955 owing to the discrepancies.
