DRDO conducts successful flight test of high-speed expendable aerial target

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), on Monday, successfully conducted the flight test of its high-speed expendable aerial target (HEAT) drone, ABHYAS, in Odisha's Chandipur area.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), on Monday, successfully conducted the flight test of its high-speed expendable aerial target (HEAT) drone, ABHYAS, in Odisha's Chandipur area.

As per a statement released by the agency, the flight test of the drone was tracked by various radars and Electro-Optic Systems, following which it proved its performance in fully autonomous way-point navigation mode.

The statement further added that the "performance of the system was as per simulations carried out and demonstrated the capability of ABHYAS to meet the mission requirement for a cost-effective HEAT". 

"The configuration of ABHYAS is designed on an in-line small gas turbine engine and uses indigenously developed MEMS-based navigation system for its navigation and guidance," DRDO said in the statement.

DRDO ABHYAS is a drone built by the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) of the agency. The proof of the concept and pre-project trials were completed in January 2013, with the first experimental launch being held at the Chitradurga Aeronautical Test Range on 23 June 2012.

The pilotless target aircraft are used by the DRDO and three services for testing their different types of missiles including air-t0-air missiles and surface to air missiles.

The ABHYAS is an advanced expendable target which can be used for simulating different types of aircraft and missiles. The project was sanctioned with an initial DRDO funding of Rs 150 million. 

Earlier in April, DRDO successfully test-fired its cruise missile ‘Nirbhay’ from a test range in Odisha. It is the country’s first indigenously designed and developed long-range sub-sonic cruise missile.

The state-of-the-art missile, which can be deployed from multiple platforms, was test-fired at 11.44 am from launch complex-3 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Odisha, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) said.

Describing the trial "successful", they said the missile, which is capable of loitering and cruising at 0.7 Mach at altitude as low as 100 meters, covered the distance to the designated target in 42 minutes and 23 seconds.
