Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee's nephew and Trinamool leader Abhishek Banerjee has sent a defamation notice to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Banerjee has accused PM Modi of allegedly making derogatory remarks against him during a public rally in West Bengal's Diamond Harbour on May 15,

Banerjee's lawyer Sanjay Basu has written to the Prime Minister, asking him to apologise within 36 hours for the defamatory comment.

During his address, PM Modi blamed the Trinamool supremo and her nephew of running the "bua-bhatija model of governance" and turning "Ganatantra" (democracy) into "Gundatantra" (hooliganism).

Banerjee is a Trinamool candidate at the Diamond Harbour constituency, wherein PM Modi said that the 'Bhatija' (Abhishek Banerjee) has no chances of winning as people are seeking change.

He said, "In West Bengal, your vote will decide if the decades-old politics of bloodshed in the state will stop or not. You will have to decide if you want to save democracy. In the 'Bua-Bhatija model of governance', people of Bengal are living in utter fear except the infiltrators, cow smugglers, women traffickers, syndicates, extortionists, chit fund leaders, coal and sand mafias. These people are immune to the fear."

"The way the aunt and nephew gang has demeaned Bengal, there is rebellion against it. Due to frustration, Didi is openly talking about taking revenge inch by inch. This is not the time to seek revenge, it is time for a change in Bengal. All your desires will stay unfulfilled and the change will come. Trust me this time, Didi's nephew chances are zero," he added.

PM Modi had also accused the Trinamool leader, and sitting MP of Diamond Harbour illegal occupying land for the construction of his office.

He said, "I have also been told that as per Trinamool's traditions, nephew's office is also constructed by illegally occupying the road. Didi, you have earned so much, the party has accumulated money through extortion, then why did your nephew illegally take the land kept for the road."

"One cannot do away with the habit of looting," he added.

The battle between PM Modi and Mamata Banerjee has turned more fierce following the suspension of the timing of election campaigning in West Bengal state by 24 hours on May 15 in the aftermath of violent clashes that broke out during BJP chief Amit Shah's roadshow on May 14.

After the Election Commission cut short the campaign in West Bengal by 24 hours, over 20 anti-BJP parties came out in support of Mamata Banerjee against the Centre and the Election Commission in West Bengal on Thursday. The 20 parties included Akhilesh Yadav led- Samajwadi party, Mayawati led- BSP, and Rahul Gandhi led-Congress.
