WATCH: Rahul Gandhi Attacks Mamata Banerjee On Her Own Turf, Day After Trinamool Drops 'Congress' From Its Name

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday launched into West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee during his rally in Malda, accusing her of doing nothing for the state

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday launched into West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee during his rally in Malda, accusing her of doing nothing for the state as he began his party's Lok Sabha campaign on 'Didi's' turf.

The tension between the two parties is well known, and it only increased when Trinamool officially dropped 'Congress' from its name. In light of the recent, and past events, the Gandhi scion left no stones unturned in targeting Mamata Banerjee.

"Has Mamata Banerjee done anything progressive in the past years? Has she done anything? Did the youth get the jobs? Were the farmers supported?," he said before attacking both PM Modi and Trinamool chief in one go by adding, "On one hand, Narendra Modi makes false promises, and on the other hand, your CM (Mamata Banerjee) makes one promise after another. But nothing is going to happen."

On Friday, the ruling party in West Bengal chose to remove 'Congress' from its name, 21 years after it had officially separated from the grand old party. With 'Trinamool' written in green with twin flowers and blue background in the new logo, the party has been using it for a couple of days now, a party source told.

"TMC is called Trinamool and after 21 years, it was time for a change," a party leader said.

The name of 'Congress' has been dropped from party banners, posters and all communication material. However, being recognised as a national party since September 2016, it will remain registered with the Election Commission as Trinamool Congress, party sources added.

It was way back in 1998 that present West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee broke away from the Congress and formed the TMC over differences of opinion on dealing with the then ruling CPI(M).
