4 celebs who were accused of sexual assault before Papon

The complaint against singer Angarag Papon Mahanta for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor has sparked a raging debate across the country

The complaint against singer Angarag Mahanta who is known best as Papon, for allegedly kissing a minor has sparked a raging debate across the country. A complaint against the popular Assamese and Bollywood singer has been filed with the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The act was captured in a video in which Papon was seen kissing a minor girl, who is believed to be a contestant of the show ‘The Voice India Kids’ and surprisingly the girl is being mentored by the singer. The video was originally posted on Papon’s official Facebook page on February 20, 2018. Many from the music and the cinema industry have spoken about it, while some have remained mum on this matter. This is not the first instance in Bollywood, there have been many such instances, previously, where celebrities were accused of sexual assault.  

Let's take a look at few names from the entertainment industry, who had their names involved in similar controversies:

Shiney Ahuja

The 'Gangster' actor's rising career was cut short when he was sentenced to seven years of imprisonment in 2009 for allegedly raping his domestic help. The housemaid reportedly withdrew her statement later, but Ahuja's punishment was based on circumstantial evidence. The case stands closed as of now.

Ankit Tiwari

Ankit Tiwari's 'Sun Raha Hai Na Tu' from 'Aashiqui 2' left the country raving about the song and he became an overnight sensation after the song became a massive hit. But a year after the release of the film the singer was caught in a controversy after his rumoured ex-girlfriend registered a rape case against the popular singer. In 2015 Tiwari was arrested. He was acquitted of the charges in 2017.

Mahmood Farooqui

The co-director of Kiran Rao's directorial 'Peepli Live' had rape charges against him filed by an American woman in 2015. Farooqui was sentenced to seven years of imprisonment and was later acquitted in 2017.

Madhur Bhandarkar

National Award Winning director Madhur Bhandarkar was caught up in a controversy when a model filled a rape case against him in 2014. The model said that the Bhandarkar had promised to cast her in his next film. The case went on for 9 years.
