Bollywood movies are famous for their romance, attractive dance numbers and mirch masala. However, some directors come up with movies that talk about mental health issues and show how these mental illnesses affect the lives of an individual as well as people related to them. Here are some of those movies that touched our hearts in this regard.

5 Hindi movies that positively promote mental health issues

Tamasha

Tamasha was a 2015 movie starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. The movie dealt with themes like identity crisis and also abrasion. Ranbir's character Ved feels a loss of self and along comes erratic behaviour and depression. The movie was directed by Imitiaz Ali.

Dear Zindagi

The Alia Bhatt and Shahrukh Khan starrer Dear Zindagi is a one-of-its-kind movie in Bollywood in which a major chunk of it lies in psychiatrist sessions. Alia’s character Kaira couldn’t sleep for three days and thus decides to go to Dr Jehangir Khan, Shahrukh's character. Kaira develops a new perspective on life and finds more happiness and comfort. The movie was directed by Gauri Shinde.

Anjaana Anjaani

Anjaana Anjaani deals with a suicidal couple, played by Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra. Ranbir's character is suffering from Acute Stress Disorder while Priyanka's character has Adjustment Disorder. The two find each other, fall in love and then plan to live happily, tackling their depression. The movie was released in 2010 and was directed by Siddharth Anand.

15 Park Avenue

This 2005 movie was directed by Aparna Sen. The movie stars Konkana Sen Sharma and Shabana Azmi. Konkana’s character Meethi is suffering from schizophrenia. The movie traces her traumatic experiences and also the effect of her situation on her family.

Karthik Calling Karthik

Karthik Calling Karthik is a movie that also deals with schizophrenia along with dissociative identity disorder. The movie stars Farhan Akhtar and Deepika Padukone in lead roles. Karthik, Farhan's character, keeps receiving calls from an unidentified caller throughout the movie, whose advice makes him a success. The movie was released in 2010.
