Karthik Nair, the Bharatnatyam dancer who performed with Hema Malini

Karthik Nair is a Bharatnatyam dancer who started practising at the age of 7. He travelled approximately 400 kms to Bengaluru every week just to learn the art of dancing. Practising this art for over 13 years now, Karthik Nair trained under Parshwanath Upadhye, a well-known dancer Bharatnatyam dancer in India.

About Karthik Nair

Karthik Nair describes his journey a tough one as the 20-year-old has to travel to Bengaluru every weekend. He was a part of a dance production team called Raasyajani which means Palate of Emotions. Two of his friends attended a workshop by Parshwanatha and told him about the same. He desperately jumped to the opportunity and is now willing to travel for hours just to train under the legend.

On August 22, he got the opportunity to perform with Hema Malini at the ISCKON temple at Juhu. Hema Malini’s sister spotted Karthik on Facebook, and was impressed with his dance videos and pictures. She then contacted Karthik through mutual contacts and offered him a chance to perform as Krishna with actor-politician Hema Malini. His master Parshwanath Upadhye even uploaded the video of the duo’s performance on his social media account, and that was the moment Karthik Nair would cherish forever.

Apart from Bharatnatyam, Karthik Nair is also an expert in Kathakali. His first Kathakali performance was when he performed in class III. He has a fond memory of wearing a costume which did not fit him well. He also shared that the costume was so heavy that he was about to fall down. He also shared that his performance with Padma Shri Kalamandalam Gopi AKA Vadakke Manalath Govindan Nair was his greatest achievement. Currently pursuing BA in English Literature, Karthik Nair is a student of Sree Narayana Guru College, Coimbatore. In future, Karthik Nair says that he wants to take up Bharatnatyam full time, but will take up a job just so he could support this passion of his.
