Actor Akshay Kumar, who is gearing up for the release of his next film 'Gold', met hockey legend Balbir Singh on Monday. The actor will be seen playing coach to the Indian hockey team that won the first gold medal at the Olympics for the country in 1948. Balbir Singh was also a part of the team that helped the country achieve this feat. Taking to twitter, Akshay Kumar shared this moment with a picture and wrote, "Met the living hockey legend Mr. @BalbirSenior who was part of the winning team that brought home the first prestigious Gold for India back in 1948 along with @sudhirchaudhary. Such an inspiration of a man with even more inspiring stories."
For the uninitiated, Balbir Singh is a three-time Olympic gold champion. He had an important role during India's victory against England in the 1948 Olympics held in London. He was also the Vice-Captain during Helsinki Olympics (1952) and as the Captain in Melbourne Olympics (1956). Singh is termed as one of the greatest players ever and is regarded as the best centre-forward that the sport of hockey has ever seen.
As a matter of fact, he still holds the record for the most number of goals scored by an individual. No hockey player has yet been able to beat that record.
Directed by Reema Kagti, 'Gold' will take you through the 12-year journey of India to win the prestigious title in a free country. The film is slated to release on the occasion of Independence Day. Also, this year marks 70 years of India's first gold medal. The film boasts of an ensemble cast including Amit Sadh, Kunal Kapoor, Vineet Singh, and Sunny Kaushal, apart from Akshay Kumar. It also marks the big screen debut of TV personality Mouni Roy. The film is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani.
