When it’s a much-anticipated film, it’s obvious that the makers try to cash in the buzz by releasing in as many theatres as possible. The power of the screen count was recently showcased with Aamir Khan-Amitabh Bachchan’s ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ taking in the highest opening ever for an Indian film, Rs 52 crore, in all the languages. The period drama had released in 7000 theatres across the world and that undoubtedly played a major role in the collections. The fact that the numbers dipped shockingly due to the poor content is a different matter altogether.
But if latest reports are anything to go by, Rajinikanth-Akshay Kumar-starrer ‘2.0’ is all set to create a record in terms of the screen count. The Shankar directorial will reportedly be screened in many as 10,000 theatres worldwide.
Like ‘Thugs of Hindostan’, the buzz is obviously high for the science-fiction drama, courtesy its intense making for the past few years and the face-off between Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar for the first time. So it’s highly possible that the movie could record the highest-opening ever for an Indian film, by an even better margin. And if the content turns out to be good, as is being expected, and audiences lap it up, there would surely be no stopping the movie from being blockbuster and breaking records.
Incidentally, it was again an action-based movie from South that was the last time a venture had released in so many theatres. We are talking about the epic ‘Baahubali: The Conclusion’, which reportedly released in 9000 theatres and set records galore apparently earning more than Rs 1000 crore across the world. It’d now be interesting to see if ‘2.0’ can beat the benchmark set by the SS Rajamouli directorial. '2.0', produced by Lyca Productions and presented by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, hits the theatres on 29 November.
