While speculation over Akshay Kumar’s citizenship has been around for some time now, more attention was brought to it over the actor not voting in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls. Moreover, the fact that he is not an ‘honorary citizen of Canada’ as ‘Khiladi Kumar’ claimed to be, also started doing the rounds. The actor finally broke his silence and issued a clarification that he never hidden the fact that he holds a Canadian passport, and that he was disappointed with the unwarranted interest’ and ‘negativity’ surrounding his citizenship. Soon after, the ‘Namastey London’ star’s old video where he says ‘Toronto is my home’ has gone viral, leading to a Twitter slugfest.

In the video,  Akshay is heard saying, “I must also tell you one thing. This is my home. Toronto is my home. After I retire from this industry, I’m going to come back here and...” While the tweet claimed he said he’ll settle in Canada, that part is not audible.

Nevertheless, netizens were furious at Akshay, some pointing out how he’ll run immediately after retirement, some asking him to go now itself and many who called him ‘Farzi (fake)Nationalist,’ some accusing him of using the country and more.

However, a section of the netizens came out in his support and pointed out how Akshay's never been to Canada in seven years and even if he leaves, he’d do a lot for the country before that. Some called it his own choice, one pointed out Alia Bhatt’s British citizenship and another wrote how many who live abroad have ‘motherland in their hearts .’

Akhay on Friday had tweeted, “I really don't understand the unwarranted interest and negativity about my citizenship. I have never hidden or denied that I hold a Canadian passport. It is also equally true that I have not visited Canada in the last seven years. I work in India, and pay all my taxes in India.
While all these years, I have never needed to prove my love for India to anyone, I find it disappointing that my citizenship issue is constantly dragged into needless controversy, a matter that is personal, legal, non-political, and of no consequence to others.Lastly, I would like continue contributing in my small way to the causes that I believe in and make India stronger and stronger."
