Bollywood: Leading ladies that are currently in political power

Bollywood has seen a lot of actors who turned politicians over the years. Here are five women who have left a mark with their political career. Read more.

There have been a number of Bollywood actors who turned politicians over the years. Shatrughan Sinha, Amitabh Bachchan, and Paresh Rawal have been famous names in Indian politics. There have also been a number of women who became an important part of Indian politics.

Bollywood ladies that are in power

1.       Hema Malini

Hema Malini is known for her work in films like Sholay, Seeta Aur Geeta, and Satte Pe Satta. The actor joined Bharatiya Janata Party in the year 2004. She initially was campaigning for the veteran actor Vinod Khanna in Punjab. Hema Malini was a Rajya Sabha member before getting elected from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh in the 2014 Lok Sabha election. In the Lok Sabha elections of 2019, the actor won again from the Mathura constituency. Hema Malini won with 60.88% votes, which is considered to be a humungous victory.

2.       Smriti Irani

Smriti Irani is known for her work in in the television serial, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. The TV actor has worked in a number of Hindi serials including Thodi Si Zameen, Thoda Sa Aasman, and Virrudh, amongst others. She started her political career in the year 2003. She was sworn in as a Rajya Sabha member in 2011. After the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Smriti Irani was appointed as the Minister of Human Resource Development, under the UPA government. After BJP won with a simple majority in the year 2019, Smriti Irani has been appointed as the Minister of Textile and also the head of the Ministry of Women and Child Development of India.

3.       Jaya Bachchan

Jaya Bachchan is known for her work in films like Sholay, Guddi, and Silsila. Jaya Bachchan was awarded a Padma Shri in the year 1992. The leading lady of Bollywood started her political career in the year 2004. That was the first time she got elected in the Rajya Sabha. In 2006, she was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha, which lasted till 2010. She was again elected in 2012, which marked her third term. In 2018, the actor was re-elected with a Samajwadi party ticket and is currently in the middle of her third term.
