The box office tale of the last three major films in Bollywood witnesses one continuing his magical run, one making a stunning comeback and a debutant pair failing to ‘launch’. The actors in question, Ayushmann Khurrana, Shahid Kapoor and Meezaan Jaffery-Sharmin Segal, had different kinds of fate with their ventures ‘Article 15’, ‘Kabir Singh’ and ‘Malaal’ respectively. While the first hit the Rs 50-crore mark, the second has almost touched the Rs 250-crore milestone and the third has sunk without a trace.

Anubhav Sinha’s ‘Article 15’ has been winning praises galore from critics and audiences alike. The social thriller-drama, despite protests in various parts of the country, achieved its first major milestone, crossing the Rs 50-crore mark on Wednesday. The figure was achieved courtesy steady collections in its second week, earning over Rs 15 crore, as per trade analyst Taran Adarsh.

While the movie won’t be able to match Ayushmann’s ‘Badhaai Ho’ which was a Rs 100-crore hit, it could probably come close to his other hit of last year, ‘AndhaDhun’, which had crossed Rs 70 crore.

Meanwhile, Shahid has bounced back in style after the failure of ‘Batti Gul Meter Chalu’ to get his first solo hit in three years after ‘Udta Punjab’ with the blockbuster success of ‘Kabir Singh.’ The movie has not just become the highest-grossing film of the year but is now nearing the Rs 250-crore club. The total now stands at Rs 249.60 crore, that was contributed by over Rs 30 crore collected in the third week, something extremely rare.

Also, Sanjay Leela Bhansali tasted his first failure in almost six years, a run that consisted of 3 hits with ‘DeepVeer’ and productions like ‘Gabbar is Back’ and ‘Mary Kom’, with the box office performance of ‘Malaal.’ The launchpad for the filmmaker’s niece Sharmin Segal and Javed Jaaferi’s son Meezaan, could only earn Rs 1.70 crore during its weekend. Since then, even the trade reports regarding the film have been few and far between. The film has collected Rs 2.75 crore in the first week, as per Box Office India.
