Congress deletes tweet on Sridevi's demise after Twitter backlash

Even as the tributes for the evergreen actor flooded the social media, a tweet by the official handle of the Indian National Congress (INC) did not go down very well with the social media users.

Bollywood’s ‘first female superstar’ Sridevi breathed her last on Saturday. Even as the tributes for the evergreen actor flooded the social media, a tweet by the official handle of the Indian National Congress (INC) did not go down very well with the social media users.

“We regret to hear about the passing away of Sridevi. An actor par excellence. A legend who will continue to live in our hearts through her stellar body of work. Our deepest condolences to her loved ones. She was awarded the Padma Shri by the UPA Govt in 2013,” posted the Congress’ social media handle.

Soon after the tweet was shared, Twitterati targeted all its wrath at the Congress for making the death of the actor, political. After the backlash, the tweet was deleted and now the revised tweet of the Congress read as, "We regret to hear about the passing away of Sridevi. An actor par excellence. A legend who will continue to live in our hearts through her stellar body of work. Our deepest condolences to her loved ones.”

Another tweet by the Congress read as, "She received a multitude of awards including the fourth highest civilian award the Padma Shri in 2013 by the Govt of India & 6 Filmfare awards, the first at the age of 14. Sridevi started her career at the age of 4 in 'Thunaivan'. Her Bollywood debut was in 'Julie' at 12." This tweet also received a lot of flak from the social media users. 

Actress Sridevi, who is popularly known for her contribution to Indian cinema with her body of work which includes, 'Mr. India', 'Lamhe', 'Khuda Gawah', 'English Vinglish' among others. The actress who was in Dubai along with her husband Boney Kapoor and younger daughter Khushi Kapoor to attend a wedding, passed away on the night of February 24.
