Coolie No 1 is an adaptation of the original of the same name, which starred Govinda and Karisma Kapoor in the lead. It was directed by Varun's father, filmmaker David Dhawan. This being David Dhawan's 45th film, the film will be produced by Vashu Bhagnani who also backed the 1995 hit comedy.

"When we do something like this the idea is that the essence has to be the same. But at the same time, the film is completely different. It is not a remake, it is an adaptation. But the title is the same," Varun told PTI.

The actors are currently in Bangkok shooting for the film. Writer Farhad Samjhi had shared a few days back -

On the professional front, Varun Dhawan was last seen in period drama 'Kalank'. The actor recently wrapped up Remo D'Souza's 'Street Dancer 3D' opposite Shraddha Kapoor. Meanwhile, Sara will be seen romancing Kartik Aaryan in Imtiaz Ali's upcoming untitled film.
